Every tournament, scrimmage, game and practice are filled with highs and lows for each team and each player. Great plays, some errors, big wins and as many losses. Thats baseball. It takes a mental toll on players!
At this age, parents a coaches trying to put it all together. What we have found very inspiring is a desire across all the teams to make our players better, by both coaches and parents, working together to help these boys and girls in our programs.
This is said to the point of cliché, but its true, baseball is such a mental game. A players success is so dependant on their attitude approaching it, they cannot just power through it, run past it, use brute strength or speed to succeed. They have to apply that physical ability at the right time, in the perfect place. We work so hard on coaching our players to improve their physical ability but often our successes and failures on any given weekend come down to the mental aspect of the game.
In late August 2017 Coach Drew on the 13U Black team who put together this document with exercises for his team based on the book The Mental Game of Baseball by H.A. Dorfman. Many of you may already be familiar with it. Drew synthesized what he felt were important points in the book into things his players could work on. This great work completed by Coach Drew and his teams and its resulting positve effect on the players, parents and coaches is now an annual pre-requisties for each player to complete who is participating in a Carson Valley Express program.
There are questions to be answered and then revisited over the course of a season, or multiple seasons.
Carson Valley Express 2018 - Mental Game of Baseball Player Workbook
We encourage each player and family to take a look at the document and if interested get the book. You can use it to help your player think about what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they adjust their mindset to be successful. Our players clearly have baseball ability, now we can help them with the mental side of the game.
Many Thanks Coach Drew!
